The short version
If you want to feel competent straight away, play a runner — the feedback is immediate and the rules are obvious. If fast games stress you, adventure games are paced far more gently and are the only category where you can genuinely finish something.
Battle games are the biggest adjustment, because winning depends on watching an enemy rather than watching yourself. Collection games look gentle and are really about risk judgement. Platformers are the most learnable, and reflex games are the shortest to learn and frequently the hardest to master.
